Axel had not simply been speaking metaphorically. It was, quite literally and painfully, a bumpy ride. To say that the road to the airport was in “bad repair,” was to commit the understatement of the millennium, and possibly even a crime against language… any language. Even the potholes had potholes, and some could have almost swallowed the Jeep whole, had Axel not been so adept at grinding the steering wheel back and forth, weaving them through the treacherous maze like a sapper leading his company through no man’s land. The wheel appeared comically small in his meaty hands, and he gripped it as if it was the only thing keeping him this side of the eternal vale—which it might have been.

The saving grace was that the distance was only five or six kilometers—a bit of a jaunt on foot, but certainly manageable by Jeep, even with the horrendous road conditions—and Max was beginning to experience a resurgence of good humor. Thinking back, it was clear to him that he, and by extension everyone else, was in much better standing now than they had been just a few hours prior. Estrada and his minions were, of course, still a definite threat, and they still faced the uncertainty, danger, and daunting challenge of locating Ahrum. Those two things, accompanied by the nagging periphery concerns regarding Bembe and Isabel—neither of whom Max fully trusted yet—still occupied the lion’s share of his mind. Still, he could feel the tide shift just a little bit in their favor. Maybe not enough to give them the advantage, but at least to the point where they had a fighting chance.

He grinned against the night air on his face as they bumped and joggled along in the open Jeep and was just about to break out into a rousing, whistled tune … when he thought he heard something that made his blood run cold. He gave Axel a solid thump on the shoulder.

“Turn off the headlights,” he said.

Axel cast him a scowl and released one hand from its steering wheel death grip long enough to rub the place on his shoulder that Max had just assaulted. “First of all, ouch. Second, if I turn off the headlights, we’re going into the ditch for sure. Off course, this road is so bad that I’m sure we’d even notice—”

“Turn off the lights! And pull over and stop.”

Axel growled but knew his friend well enough to hear the little something in Max’s voice that meant he was deadly serious. He flipped off the headlights and then brought the Jeep to a crawl, then a stop.

“Kill the engine.”

Axel did so. “What the—” he started, but Max held a finger to his lips. And then Axel understood.

A distinct whump-whump-whump sound cut through the night air.

“Is … that what I think it is?” Axel said.

Max nodded. “If you think it’s a helicopter, and almost certainly a scary one, then yes—that is exactly what you think it is.”

“And you think it’s after us?”

“I think we are in no position to assume anything other than exactly that.
